Product detailed description

Celebrate a quarter of a century of one of the world’s most popular modern board games! To mark its 25th anniversary, the cult classic Carcassonne by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede is being released in a special limited edition, which immediately catches the eye with its unique retro ‘pixel’ graphics on the tiles and wooden figures in five vibrant colours (blue, pink, green, yellow and orange). This collectable anniversary box set contains not only the complete base game, but also the popular ‘River’ mini-expansion and the brand-new ‘Magic Wells’ mini-expansion.

Carcassonne stands out for its elegance, accessibility and immense replay value. The rules are straightforward and can be explained in just a few minutes, yet the game offers plenty of scope for tactical thinking, assessing the situation and friendly banter around the table. It’s the ideal choice both for family games with children and for a group of friends looking for fast-paced, clever fun without any unnecessary downtime.

The game begins by placing a single starting tile in the centre of the table. During the game, players take turns clockwise, and the active player’s turn always consists of three steps in a fixed order: turning over and placing a tile, optionally placing a token, and scoring enclosed territories. First, the player draws a face-down landscape tile and places it on the existing board so that all its sides logically connect with the surrounding terrain – roads must connect to roads, meadows to meadows, and city walls to cities.

The player may then decide whether to place one of their wooden companions from the supply onto the tile they have just placed. Depending on where they place the figure, it becomes a robber on the road, a knight in a town, a monk in a monastery or a peasant in a meadow. However, the fundamental rule is that no other figure – not even the player’s own – may be present on that territory at the moment the tile is placed. Whilst gradually connecting previously separate sections may result in multiple figures from different players gathering in a single territory, in such cases the player with the majority of figures determines the score.

The third step is to count the points immediately if placing a tile has resulted in the enclosure of a territory. A route is complete when it is bounded on both sides by a crossroads, a town, a monastery or a closed loop (1 point for each tile). A town is enclosed as soon as it is completely surrounded by walls with no gaps (2 points for each tile plus 2 points for each coat of arms). A monastery is enclosed and is worth a full 9 points when it is completely surrounded by all 8 neighbouring tiles. From the scored areas, the pieces are returned to the players’ reserves for subsequent turns. The game ends when all tiles have been drawn from the piles, after which a final scoring of the unclosed areas takes place and the winner with the highest total score is determined.

Game components:

  • 71 landscape tiles featuring city sections, roads, junctions and monasteries in meadows (light-coloured reverse)
  • 1 starting tile (dark-coloured reverse, without a river)
  • 12 river tiles (from the ‘River’ mini-expansion)
  • 40 follower tokens (8 each in blue, pink, green, yellow and orange)
  • 1 score tracker
  • Game rules (including the ‘Magic Wells’ mini-expansion)
