A board game full of sunshine, cigars, and rum.

Pre-revolutionary Cuba: In turbulent times, the island’s cities strive for their own independent wealth and influence. Who can trade their crops and commodities most profitably on the domestic market, or earn the most from exports using merchant ships?

Who will send influential representatives to parliament to shape laws and build distilleries, hotels, and banks for the well-being of the people?

The new edition of the board game KUBA combines the popular strategy game KUBA with the best elements from its expansion, EL PRESIDENTE, and further develops them with minor tweaks—while retaining most of the original game’s characteristic warm atmosphere.

The goal of the game is to collect as many victory points as possible. Players earn victory points for sending merchant ships from the harbor, as well as for building and using structures and for complying with laws—such as paying taxes and customs duties.

Each player has five characters at their disposal during their turn, each offering different services. The Merchant allows you to buy and sell goods and resources at the market. The Architect can construct buildings that provide a variety of benefits—such as resources, goods, money, victory points, or influencing votes in parliament.

The laborer can obtain products by cultivating crops on plantations. The foreman allows players to take advantage of the effects of the buildings they have constructed on their plantation. Finally, the mayor oversees the loading of goods onto merchant ships, which can yield a significant number of victory points.

The earlier in a given round a player uses a character, the greater the advantage they usually gain. Each character also carries a different weight when voting on laws in parliament. Therefore, it’s always necessary to carefully consider when to use which character and which to save for voting on laws.

The game is highly variable and allows players to constantly try out new strategies.

Product detailed description

The sun-drenched cities of pre-revolutionary Cuba strive for wealth and political influence. Build a thriving plantation, trade in citrus, tobacco, rum, or cigars, and decide which laws will take effect. Each round presents you with the choice of whether to prioritize immediate profit, long-term development, or a majority in parliament.

CUBA – New Edition is designed for 2 to 5 players who enjoy strategic games involving resource management, planning several moves ahead, and significant interaction in a shared market. The recommended age is 12 and up, and you should set aside approximately 75 to 120 minutes per game. The rules offer a range of interconnected possibilities, so the game is best suited for groups that want to gradually refine their strategies and explore new paths to victory.

In a two-player game, you’ll have more opportunities to work with the promenade, since each player controls two cars. With more players, the importance of proper timing, keeping an eye on opponents, and competing for advantageous buildings, ships, and political power increases.

Become the manager of your own plantation and collect victory points over the course of six rounds. On your turns, you use five characters—the Laborer, the Merchant, the Architect, the Foreman, and the Mayor. Each allows you to perform a different action and also grants a certain number of votes. You play four of these characters during the action phase, saving the last one for the parliament. The order in which you play them therefore affects not only your economic development but also your future political power.

The Worker activates a row and column of your plantation, allowing you to obtain wood, water, and stone, or to harvest citrus, sugarcane, and tobacco. You’ll use the raw materials for construction, while the crops can be sold on the fluctuating market, loaded onto merchant ships, or processed into rum and cigars using buildings. Unstored crops will spoil at the end of the round, so you must carefully balance production with sales.

Once per round, you’ll drive to the promenade and use a selected character’s service. This also covers up one event and prevents others from taking the same action. After trading ends, it’s time for Parliament: the character card you kept and any votes you purchased will determine who passes two new laws. These laws can grant points, require taxes or levies, or change the conditions for the next round.

  • Each character links a powerful economic action with votes in Parliament, so the correct order of turns requires thoughtful decision-making.
  • The layout of the fields on your plantation determines what you can produce in a single turn, and gradual expansion changes its capabilities and focus.
  • The market reacts to the supply of goods, so prices fluctuate throughout the game, and an opponent may make a profitable trade just before you do.
  • Merchant ships reward quick planning, but the most profitable ports also require you to prepare the necessary commodities in time.
  • Thirty buildings open up various paths to victory, ranging from crop processing and trade to finance and the strengthening of political influence.
  • Parliamentary voting allows you to change the rules of the game, though you pay for additional votes with your own money and must gauge your opponents’ intentions.
  • The Promenade offers useful services and events that you can block with your car, thereby influencing the entire following round.
  • Production, storage, construction, exports, and laws form an interconnected system in which short-term profit clashes with long-term development.
  • The new edition integrates the tried-and-true elements of the El Presidente expansion directly into the base game and supplements them with modified rules and buildings.
  • Each game varies depending on the selection of buildings, ships, laws, and Promenade cards, so you can create a different economic strategy every time.

The authors are German game designers Michael Rieneck and Stefan Stadler. Stadler has also been involved in editorial work on board games for more than twenty years. The artwork was created by German board game illustrator Michael Menzel and Munich-based illustrator and tattoo artist Stefan Sonnberger, who also designed the cover for the new edition.

The new edition was produced by the Berlin-based publisher Deep Print Games. It combines the core of the original game with selected elements from the El Presidente expansion, which are now an integral part of the game system. The rules and buildings have been revised, and some procedures have been adjusted.
